Or this true story: The other week I had a nasty sore throat, thought it was strep. Got the exam, negative on strep. The doc said "You need Mucinex, the 1200mg in the blue pack, twice a day". I got home and my wife asks what's the deal. I said "He told me to take 1200mg of Metamucil twice a day." After pondering this errant reply, I figured the Metamucil would work just as good: I would be afraid to cough...
Back to the reason for this post.
The longer I train the more I realize there is to learn. I've been trying to figure out Eric's bio-cycle for how many "on" weeks he has until he has an "off" week. We now know his "off" week may be two or even three weeks. Anyway, we were up to our third consecutive heavy week. Two weeks ago Eric was in NJ with his Church helping clean up storm damage: no training. Last week we trained on Tuesday. Good day. We did the 275 Buckeye on bench, a couple extra reps, some heavy assistance work, good stuff. So today the warmup set goes great. We get to ~185 for 6 and all of a sudden it's like Eric hits a wall, and I'm thinking "okay, data for the on/off cycle". We go ~215x4 and it's just as bad so I decide to modify the weight and reps a bit just for the sake of salvaging the routine. We go to 225x2 and the bar speed doubles. BANG, two reps like it's 165. So we go 245x1. Cakewalk. So we do it again. BANG. Easy rep. So I'm about to unload and do the drop set and Eric says "I was thinking 250." So we reload to 250 and BAM rattles the weights at the top. Ridiculously good bench. So by now I'm not only baffled but stoked. We drop back to ~215 for 4 and it's as if there's a magnet on his chest. Ok, not THAT bad, but uncharacteristically (that's a really long word when you're typing) slow and heavy.
I am at a loss.
I've thought about the Bossi routine, but Eric requires too long a warmup for the Bossi to work in our limited time. I guess for now we'll stick with the Buckeye or some slight tweak of the Buckeye. In the meantime it's back to square one figuring out how many weeks between cycles.
WOO HOO!
God Bless.

So yesterday Eric officially got 275 on the bench. We haven't been working pause presses so it was a touch-n-go, but a perfectly acceptable gym lift. In January we're going to start back working pauses using the modified Buckeye/Hepburn, using the 250 Buckeye to start until we get the pauses up where we want them (275, of course).
I was finally able to lock 275 out on a full range rep, first time since the last surgery. Praise the Lord!
God Bless, and have a blessed and merry CHRISTmas.

It appears my punctuality in posting is amiss...
Since last post: Second week of paused Buckeye Hepburns back in January, I was trying to do the percentages in my head, which is a whole different topic. Ended up a slightly errant bar load and daggone if Eric didn't pause 265. Since then I've done a tad better at calculating so he's up to 4 paused singles at 235. On the squats, I pulled out the old Jedi Mind Trick, throwing on 10s and 5s until we were at 315. Eric liked the feel of it so he did it again. He went to what we call cutoff depth, not buried, but probably legal to 2 out of 3 judges. On the deadlift, he's still pulling 315x6 to 8 with the trap bar, 275x6 with the straight bar.
My progress is still slow, but I'm still there 5 days a week, thanks to the Lord!
God BLess.

I know that during the Holidays it was hard for me to keep up on posts and to get into the gym. Good to hear from you.

So today Eric and I were squatting. His previous max was 315. I was doing that sneaky "let's just throw on a 10 and a 5" load thing. Eric hit a double with 325. Can I get a Woo Hoo?
My bench has finally gotten over that plateau. About time, it's only been 2 years since the last surgery. I've gone from doing the BuckHep (or HepBuck, can't remember which one we're doing...) with 250x8 singles for the last bar load, to doing progressive triples from 225 to 260~265. Thank the Lord! Still don't see a return to competition, surgery has gotten too expensive, but it's kind of fun to still be able to lift like I was still 43... :')
God Bless.
