Had a good week. Yesterday I benched, worked up to 225, did some 3's and some 5's with a few pauses mixed in here and there. It felt good, praise the LORD!
Today I squatted 4 plates for the first time. Hit a double, the weight felt good, but I could feel the weight "pulling" the surgery area a little so I dropped to 315 for a single and called it a day. The arm is fine, I just recognized the feeling as saying "okay buddy, you're not quite ready for this yet."
Have a blessed weekend!

Holy cow, has it really been since December since I posted? Good grief, 3254 posts in the first year of the forum and I go 4 months without a post? What ails me?
Anyway, for whomever may be interested. The guy I'm training is up to a 240 bench. I haven't converted him to squats yet but he's leg pressing 650x8 reps at 160 bwt, I'll be throwing squats in soon.
I'm still squatting 405 for a few reps once per week, taking it easy on an old injury. Got the bench back up to 275 paused, no hurry since the arm seems to be healing nicely at the pace I'm pushing it.
That's about it!
God Bless.

^^^Echo.
Sorry to hear about the nagging injury. I now understand why you don't see many of us left in this game after 40 - it definitely gets harder.

Thanks, guys. Eric squatted last Tuesday for maybe the third or fourth time. Ever. After a few "working up" sets I got him to try 225. The first attempt he wend a little short but managed full upright. I said "Do it again". So he promptly hit a double. Not too shabby for about the third or fourth squat workout ever. Oh, did I fail to mention he was supersetting squats with leg presses, up to I think last week it was 2x560x6?
So today we went light on the leg presses. I had Eric squatting sets of 9 because I couldn't decide between 8 or 10. We went 135, 155, 3x175. Then I bumped to 225 and I told Eric to do a single and we'd add a little weight. Danged if he didn't pop out a triple. So we loaded up 250 and I told him to do a single. First attempt he bailed out so I re-racked for him and got him back under the bar. 1.5 minutes after bailing on 250 that whoopersnapper knocked out a double with 250. Maybe 5th squat session ever, 155 pounds soaking wet. That made my whole week at the gym worthwhile right there!
God Bless.

A lot has gone on since last post. First of all, today is the first day my server connection didn't time out before this page loaded.... modern technology is great when it works... But here's the lowdown.
Eric's training has been going awesome lately. I spotted him for a 240 touch n go max bench three weeks ago, at about 155-160 bodyweight. The week before that we were squatting. I had him do a double with 225 and a double with 250. I had him put 275 on the bar and told him to do a single. Well, he got into his own head and bailed on the way down. We re-racked the weight and I, um, "explained" to him how he had already hit a double with 250 and this wasn't but 25 pounds more, he ought to be able to get it. That crazy rascal then hit a double with 275 and proceeded with drop sets back to 135. He's getting pretty used to the Buckeye and chains now (opposite weeks) and in the 2 years we've been training together he's really going from a guy who visits the gym to a potential powerbuilder.
My workouts have been less than impressive lately. Tomorrow morning I go in for double hernia surgery. They've affected my lifting a little... Anyway, hoping to get them both fixed tomorrow, 6 weeks no lifting, start back slow, blah blah blah. I've got so many frequent flyer miles at the surgery center if I get two more surgeries the third one will be free! Woo hoo!
God Bless.

Tomorrow, it will be 6 weeks since my surgery. I am more than a tad anxious to get back to lifting. Slow and steady recovery, I don't plan on squatting over 400 until at least Wednesday.
:')
Eric has exceeded all expectations. Last week he did 215 for 2x4, and did 225x8 on the deadlift with the Gilling-grip. Jamie has been able to go right much heavier as well, and we're hypothesizing all the upper back work has stabilized his shoulder far better than the surgery did, now he's going for 205x10 on the "iso lateral hammer wide grip push down thingamabob" machine.
God Bless.

You all should have been at the gym the last two days to see those 10# dumbells flying and hear all the little old ladies going "ooh ahh".
But it beats the heck out of cardio.

I have worked up to a mind boggling 25 reps with an equally intimidating 25# dumbell, and even squatted this morning with a blood-splattering 65 pounds! TWO sets!!! And if I can think of anything else ludicrous to type I'll add FIVE exclamation points to my next sentence!
:')
This recovery is going extra slow given the nature (no desire to see my intestines pop out my belly button) but hey, I had about decided I was done competing anyway after the second bicep tear.
Eric's been doing a 4x5 routine on the bench with 200 lately, so we're pumped about getting him into his first meet. He won't make the 165s though but I told him for his first meet it really doesn't matter, it's about DOING the meet. He's also been up as high as sets of 6 with 225 on the deadlift but we haven't really pushed that as hard, since he only wants to do a bench contest or two. Not bad for a guy that weiged 95 pounds when he graduated high school...
God Bless.

It is good to see that you are at least doing some kind of workout. Many people would just forget about any exercise after going through what you have gone through. Just hang in there and do what you can.

Okay, so today Eric was supersetting deadlift with leg presses while I altered earth's gravity with those mind bending 100# (yes you read that right, ONE HUNDRED POUNDS) bench presses.
So Eric knew he had been going up to 225 x 6 to 8 on the deadlifts. On his last set of leg press, Jamie and I sneaked another 10 on each end, 245 bar load. Eric knocked out 6 reps then Jamie told him how much it was. So to give out a nice round number I threw a dinky on each end so he could finish the set with an even 250.
The guy is getting measurably stronger by the week. It's kind of scary really....
God Bless.

I've now created TWO monsters...
While I was completely dominating the gym today with my four sets of 25 with the 35 pound dumbells....
One Arm Jamie (he has zero cartilage in a rebuilt shoulder) and Eric the Great were deadlifting. They started with 225 for 2x6. They bumped up to 245 for 2x6. Well, next thing you know Jamie has loaded up to 265. Jamie (who is 6' 250 pounds) knocks out like 6-8 reps, then Eric (5'-9" 170 pounds) pulls it for a PR. Mind you, Eric usually doesn't go all the way to the floor, he had done the first several sets like Romanian deadlifts, so the lift was all the more impressive for me. I know first hand how much the RDLs can take out of a person...
Just as a side note, 5 or 6 years ago, after surgery, Jamie's doctor told him to stop lifting. He had lost probably 50-60% of the mobility in his right arm before he came back to the gym 3-ish years ago. Now he's deadlifting every other week, low pulls, close grip benching, has regained over half of the lost mobility and is back building muscle instead of just going through the motions.
I so enjoy this sport.
God Bless.

It always is fun watching guys you train with make gains. It is a great way to keep your mind in the game. I was curious as to how old Eric is. Keep pushing those guys so that when you get healed you will have something to shoot for.

Eric's 27, thanks for asking.
Speaking of Eric (insert smiley emoticon here...) Today was bench max day. His goal was 250, Jamie and I kept him distracted while we were loading the bar. (Duplicate smiley emoticon...) We started the singles at 185, went to 225, then straight to 250. BLASTED 250, plenty left in the tank. He said he felt good for 10 more, I did have to help him a little off the chest, but he locked it out strong. He went for 265 but I had to actually help him with it. If I were Eric I'd say I were good for a 255 bench, but he can officially claim 250. New PR! Can I get a Woo Hoo!
A little help is requested though. Eric and I both seem to be stronger on, for example, second set of 5, or third rep of a set than the first. Over the years I've figured out how I can warm up to do a meet or a max, but I'm still a little baffled on how to hit Eric's "rep groove" without burning him out with lower weight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Yall have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Happy new year all, hope you had a blessed Christmas.
Eric and I are doing a modified Hepburn bench routine, Tuesday was our first day with 235, one single. Given the odd nature of Eric's warmups-to-working reps lag, I had him do an extra warmup set. He proceeded to bounce the 235 off the ceiling of the gym. I'm excited what the next several weeks will bring working him up to a new max.
Yesterday we deadlifted. If you recall, Eric has done a 6-by with 245, and a single with 265. Well, after seeing Jamie the One Shoulder Wonder (TOSW for short) hit 245x8, Eric got a little stoked. He loaded up to 265 and proceeded to knock out a very fast 4x with 265. Needless to say Jamie and I were more than a little impressed. Eric's form has greatly improved and it's transferring into outstanding results in gains so far.
Yall have a great weekend. God Bless.

Latest updates Eric's updates: We've gone to doing the Buckeye as a warmup then going into the Hepburn. Since January Eric has gone to a 265 tng bench, and this past week did 255x5 singles, the last one or two had ridiculous explosion. On his deadlift he's gone to 285x4, and hit a 300 parallel squat on the Smith machine. He only squats every 2-3 weeks so we're not going "heavy" on the barbell until his technique is perfect, but his knees aren't collapsing any more, and he's breaking parallel every rep now. The bar awaits... Jamie TOSW has dropped from 270 to 210, and just since January has lost 43 of those pounds. His strength has NOT suffered. He can deadlift just fine on the straight bar but has his best workouts on the trap bar. I believe his best lately has been 275x10 on the trap bar, and 285x8 on the straight bar. I'm just working out with the guys now so I'm pretty much doing their routines, once in a while I can feel the bolts in my forearms but for the most part I'm good to go.
God Bless.

Let's start three weeks ago. JTOSW and I kept adding 10s to the deadlift until we had Eric do a set of 8 with 310. Never told him how much it was. We then broke honest and loaded up 315 and it stuck to the floor.... C'est la vie. Last week we went with big wheels and Eric pulled through with 315 for 8. Not too shabby!
This morning, I monkeyed with the warm up sets a little to try and get the groove earlier (as I was running late. Guess I ought to concede late is the new on time...) We went 205, 225, 245, 265, 275. On the 275 it was a 2-finger spot. I think if we had more time to rest between sets he'd have gotten it clean, as I had to rush it a bit. Give Eric a good day and he may be a 275 bencher before we know it.
God Bless.
