Sir Doug...sounds like your partner is a perfect candidate for the MM-Misery routine!
Squats are looking good, BTW!

Thanks, guys! TP, if I put him on that routine, I'm going to be sure to do it anonymously...
:')
I benched today. No, really. I actually benched. Not heavy, mind you, but it was an actual bench. With plates. Here's what I'm (casually, liberally, kindly, generously, you choose) calling a bench: 95x20 135x20 Praise the LORD! 135x10 paused for 2 sets
Incline 135x10 135x8 paused 135x5 the shoulder flexibility isn't 100%, and it started tightening, so I counted blessings and unloaded the bar.
Some tricep isolation things just to promote conversation.
WOO HOO what a great day!
God BLess!

Definitely a thrill! Last week I did bench with 135 for 3x20. So today I did 155 for 3x15. It felt GOOD! I'm mixing in tricep extensions and hammer curls every day so when I go back to the doc tomorrow my arm will look really healthy, with a good pump or something, and he'll turn me loose. (Wishful thinking through rose colored glasses begins to skew my realistic expectations...) :')
The last few weeks I've been training one of my former students. When he graduated he was about 90 pounds and couldn't do 10 pushups. Today I spotted him on the bench for 4x5 with 175, and on the last set he did 2 plus a paused single. The kid weighs a buck 60 soaking wet with his boots on, and has just started really lifting this summer. It does me good to see stuff like that.
God Bless!

Today was a good day. A really REALLY good day.
First off, it was squat day. That's always good. Between each set, 15 standing calf raises with 275 135x10 225x5 315x2 405x1 425x1 315x10
Did about 10 sets of curls and triceps, to failure/burnout, to get a good pump for the doc visit. The doc turned me loose to begin adding weight at my pace. I tried to keep a straight face but I couldn't help but grinning. The cool thing is this doc has worked with the Chicago Bears and the USA Olympic lifting team, so he kinda has a little experience working with us compulsively insane iron junkies, so getting the go-ahead was good to me!
Praise the LORD!
God Bless!

Gosh has it been that long since I posted a log?....
Okay, I benched Monday and today. So far I'm up to 225 3x7 and 1x9. Inclines up to 185 3x5 Still doing lots of tricep isolations. The arm seems to handle tricep work better for some reason.... (hmmm.... torn bicep tendon... tricep doing better.... I'm going to have to think a while....)
Squats, my most recent workout was Tuesday. Did a 405x3 followed by a 425x3 I can thank the LORD for the squats! They don't seem to have been affected as far as maintaining strength.
Deadlifts. Okay, in my doc visit he told me I'd be better served to do lots of reps for now, which is part of the reason I'm counting so high on the bench. So my deadlifts over the last three weeks have gone like this: Week 1: 225x50 singles Week 2: 250x50 singles Week 3: 275x50 singles
:')
Tomorrow is deadlift day... any takers on what the plan might be?
The tennis elbow is beginning to subside significantly, I'd say I'm 80-90% pain free. Been able to do some EZ Curl curls, and dumbells NOT hammer curls. Getting back into the low pull, high pull, and pullups pretty well with much less pain.
God Bless!

Doug! i've missed your posts! 225x9 isn't too shabby at all! if i had to take a guess, i'd say your bench is getting close to the range it used to be. i just punched 225x9 into one of those 1rm calculators (so i guess it can be taken with a grain of salt), and it says you should be around 285.
50 reps on the deadlift is absolutely brutal. best of luck!
i'll continue praying for your ongoing recovery!

I know we talk occasionally, but I will say it here as well.
Great job!!! I know, all too well, that getting back to training after a serious injury can be a daunting task - both mentally and physically. Your physical and mental dedication are both inspiring and inspirational.
God bless and safe training.

Thanks, all. 3Speed, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, powerlifting's 90% physical and 90% mental. I try not to think in the gym, so fortunately been able to focus on the physical.....
Rick, it has been SO much longer than it seems! It's going great, thank the LORD, but to paraphrase 3Speed, this patience thing is trying my patience...
Greg, my Monday post is just for you.... ;')
Last Friday, deadlift, 300x50 singles, 28 minutes. I broke a sweat.... The "Gilling-grip" is not for sissies.
Monday, bench. 225x10, 10, 9. Thanks the LORD!
Tuesday, squat. 375x5x3 Slow and easy, focused on depth and form.
Yesterday, back/biceps. Woo hoo. Anyway, the bicep is beginning to recover. While my right arm mocks and laughs at the dumbell I'm using, my left arm tries to tap out..
Today: bench #2 Warmup, 185x5, 225x3, 250x1, 275x1 Paused long enough for my spotter to ask "Do you guys REALLY have to pause that long?" Methinks it was legit... Praise the LORD!
Tomorrow I'm going to back off the 50 reps on the DL. Probably do 325x5 then get to some RDL's and SLDL's that I've sorely missed, pun intended...
God BLess!

Two things today, first things first.
Two weeks ago, one of my friends went for her 1-year followup for cancer. The doc found some growth on the scar, and told my friend it was 50-50 cancer. My friend had to go through a biopsy, bone scans, etc, plus two weeks of waiting. Yesterday she got the reports back: CANCER FREE! Sometimes things like a shoulder tweak or an off-day seem so insignificant...
Okay, this week. Monday, bench: 235x3x8, got tired of counting to 12 and 15. Incline: 185x3x5 Tuesday, squat: 455x1, 405x5x2 thank the LORD! Thursday: bench: 245 5, 5x4 (next week deload, planning on 3x8 following week, didn't want to push the point on my "second" bench day of the week) Today: deadlift: 325x5, 405x1, 425x1, 455x1, 475x1
475 is what I was doing the day I tore my bicep. Admittedly that day I was going for 5, today I was driving out fear. Having switched to a Gilling-Grip, I had no idea what to expect grip-wise or bicep-tendon-wise. Needless to say it's been a while, but thank the LORD the rep was solid and steady, not fast, but legal in any fed, and the grip didn't give out. Finished with 315x3 and shrugs with 225x20.
I am constantly humbled by how good the LORD has been to me, thanks to HIM for HIS grace!
God Bless.

Been a while, thought I'd update yall on the arm progress.
On the bench, per doctor's orders, still sticking "basically" with the 3x8 routine. Week before last on my "light" bench day I felt pretty good. Went up to 275x3, still felt good. Hit 300 for a sure-nuff controlled touch-n-go, thank you LORD!
On the deadlift, can't remember if I've posted this or not. A few weeks ago, was having a good workout, decided to test how good the doc really is (insert mischievous smiley here). Pulled 475x1. Mind you, that's the weight I was pulling when I tore the bicep to begin with. Thank you LORD!
Side note: deadlifts are different when you use a Gilling-grip....
Squats: they seem like they haven't missed a beat. Despite what several guys have posted... cough cough.... today I did 5 singles with 455 then a triple with 405. Next week, deload.
The bench, I'm currently at 255x3x8, planning to go to 265 in the next week or two.
God Bless.
