Doug, to keep the chains out from under the bar, I put an extra pair of collars on the bar out at the end and hang the chains from there.
What works for one person might be totally off base for another. I can only do reps on deads about once every 4-6 weeks but as you now know - There ain't nuttin like it. You know you done good when you finish the set and it feels like the top of your head is about to blow off and your lower back is pleading with you to take up knitting.

Yeah, I about rolled when I read that knitting thing. How true!
Today: back to heavy squatting.
BWT: 180 (uh-oh.....)
135x10 225x5 315x2 405x1 435 4 singles
Calf raises (all x 20) 200 290 380 x 4 sets
I was so dead set on getting at least 4 squats in that I was 5 minutes late for my class. Uh, I'm the teacher!

3 Things 1) From what I remember as a college student, we didn't mind one bit if the teacher was late. 2) Nice squattin. Looks like its coming together for you. 3) Man, I miss squattin. ;D

I moved my grip in one finger width since I've been hammering my triceps since Feb. It "seemed" to go really well.
Bwt: 176 (glad I didn't do that at the house......) 135x10 t-n-g 185x5 paused henceforth 205x3 225x2 250x1 285 5 pause singles, new grip, 60 sec between reps
225x13 t-n-g 225x6 close grip
decline skull crushers, close grip 115x5x2
40 minutes

That looks strong. Looks like your going to do well in VT with some PRs. What are you trying to accomplish on the 60 sec between reps? Looks darn brutal.

Thanks, Chancey. I would actually be elated to just equal what I did in Orlando. Meet of my life! Any more is just icing on the cake.
What I am trying to achieve: have more time in my 40 minutes to do supplemental exercises. That's about it. I'd say "brutal" is a fair and accurate assessment....

Dang it, boy. Yoy gotta quit telling all my secrets. I took the cast off mysely last Thursday. But I switched careers last week and I have been working so much that I have no time to train. I left home at 11PM monday and I just got back at 6PM on Wednesday. Gonna try to arrange my schedule to get all my workouts on either Saturday or Sunday.

Man what a shift! I know you had told me a little about that. I hope you had enough rest on that heckuva 3-day marathon!
Congrats on getting the cast off! If it still hurts, do like Hammer and duct tape that bad boy.

Today was my "light" bench day, so as a lark, I tried some of those "grunt benches" and the 1/4-1/2-full press things. Here's how it went:
Grunts: 185x3 205x3 225x3 225 is a good weight for these.
1/4-1/2-full things: 185x3 205x3 225x2 and a half..... 205 is a good weight for these.....
I already respected that 275x3, but now even moreso!

Today: deadlift
The plan: 500 for 3 singles Things don't always go according to plan....
Got 500x1, then a miss. Decided to drop back to 455 for some reps. 455x1 Decided to go back to the sets of 3 to 5 for a coupla cycles.....
Overall, a really good learning experience. I found out I can get 5 up on a bad day, and I figured out my new strategy for VT. It worked for Orlando......

Bench day!
Typical warmups Then: 295x5 singles! That was tent meeting, good old-fashioned shouting time there!
Tried the dumbell hammer tricep press thingys 3Speed gave me tips on. 60# dumbells went for an easy 5, 70# dumbells had a mind of their own. I'll stick with the 60s for a few weeks.

Thanks, Chancey. Mostly singles, but I do 'em in waves. This go-round I'm going 285-295-305. Next go-round I'm going to attempt 290-300-310. If the 300 is a no-go, I'll spend my third week doing more reps and some chain work. (LOVE those chains!)
Today: SQUATTING!
Typical warmups, then: 405x2 445x5 singles Praise God! This was a great workout for me. Since August, I've wanted to really concentrate on my bottom end so when I break parallel I can come out of the hole strong. I concentrated on burying the squats then exploding, 2-3" below parallel. On my last single, I felt as though I could have gone for a double or triple, but that's not the plan.
Also did calf raises. Glute/ham work on Friday! Yippee ki-yi-yay!

Sorry I haven't been following along every day - very hectic schedule.
Great work on the bench and the squat. It looks like you have solid game plan.
Anyone who is following any of these logs can take away a valuable lesson from Doug's log. Doug is a very strong lifter who is willing to take the time to make slow steady progress.

Then....there's today's workout...... You ever read in various publications/logs/blogs etc where folks say "if you don't feel it, don't lift"? Today was that day. Fortunately I had done my low pulls and curls before I decided to call it a day. This 6+/- hours of sleep a night is catching up with me.....

Rest up brother and get em next time. I can look back through the serious injuries i"ve incurred from lifting and everyone of them happened either when I didn't fell right that day and was just trying to grind it out (my latest broken foot) or when I felt unstoppable and went for something I shouldn't have(blown shoulders). Discretion is often truly the greater part of valor.

I am a big proponent of "different is bad" when it comes to pain during workouts. Anytime I feel anything out of the ordinary, I stop. In 9 years, the three times that I did not do that...I suffered an injury.
Discretion IS the better part of valor AND...
While Eagles may Soar...Weasels don't get sucked into Jet Engines...
