I keep reading your bench day routines and kick myself every time I do, because I keep telling myself that's looks like something to try. AND I never do! I'm hoping by telling you this, I will, why not nothing else has worked

I have just been extremely busy and have missed some workouts and blogging. On January 22nd bodyweight was 222.8. Weighed 211.4 this a.m. I am trying to get down to 198# weight class for American Challenge.
Workout from 3-14-13
Bench 45x25 135x12 185x7 paused 225x6 paused 275x3 paused 295x3 paused 320x3 paused 335x3 T&G 275x8 T&G
Close grip 225x5 paused 245x5 paused 265x3 paused
Seated rows 135x10 135x10 135x10
Preacher curls 70x10 80x8 90x6 70x10
Weighted crunches 3x30
Changed my bench up alittle because of not making it to the gym. Workout was a real struggle which I atribute to missed time and weight loss.

That is inspiring...especially with the bar set so high. I do an annual police and fire meet with an officer who is 60 at 242 with a 425. He always seems to overshoot his third, missing with 440 at lockout. You guys have similar co-efficients. Informed people certainly appreciate this. To a certain degree, I think this type of strength and longevity surpasses the impressiveness of bigger weights by younger guys. (Goes without saying this is better than a lot of younger guys anyways). In terms of meets, Jack seems to have maintained a 425 for the past five years, which is the strongest I think he has ever been. (He was a late commer to meets, did more hypertrophy things till then). Its funny how age only seems to matter when people show it negatively. When I'm around guys like Jack, or reading logs like yours, its easy to forget what birthday is associated!

When I'm around guys like Jack, or reading logs like yours, its easy to forget what birthday is associated! It's also worth noting that people who start younger in PLing tend to burn out or at least max their potential quicker and therefore also tend to "level out" at a younger age (not sure if this applies to single-lift lifters too, or just full PL's, but at least full PL's from what I'm told). In fact, the guy who got me into PLing and coached me for a time told me that the fact that I didnt get into PLing until my mid 30s actually can be an advantage in that your muscles don't fully mature until you're into your 40s and you have no real mileage on the odometer at an age when a lot of your stiffest competition has been at it for 10+ years with accompanying aches and pains. Not sure that what I'm saying even fully applies here, but thought I'd just add to what George is saying, just to agree that older doesn't have to mean anything bad; in fact in some ways it can be a benefit! -Ryan

"Weighed 210.0 this a.m.Goal is to lift in 198 weight class"
Wow...I used to do that...I used to roll around 203 to 205 and starved myself to stay there. I'm 5'11" so i was pretty lanky for a bencher.
I think the most I dropped from to make 198 was 208. It was at the first Raw Unity meet in 2008: I spent an hour in the hotel room tub, water as hot as I could stand and just my face sticking out, to sweat out the last couple pounds.
After that, i moved to 220's permanently :-)
" I didnt get into PLing until my mid 30s actually can be an advantage in that your muscles don't fully mature until you're into your 40s and you have no real mileage on the odometer"
Couldn't agree more. I didn't start *lifting* for real until I was 28. Did my first competition just before my 36th birthday.
Now my goal is to bench 500 raw (and keep it into my 50's), and still bench 400+ in my 70's (God willing)

This is all good stuff. I lifted fairly hard in high school, took several years off and even after beginning I was hot and cold. I bet in 17years of training, I have likely only actually lifted consistently for 8 of them! Now, with age at the door as motivation, I don't see a stoppage. I used to beat myself up for all of the layoffs, wondering where I would be with consistency. No doubt stronger now, but you guys put things into perspective I didn't consider before. Aside from one minor pec tear, there has been relatively nothing injury wise...and I've done some stupid things...lol.
Maybe its the warmer weather here, but I'll be if, for the first in a long while....optimism isn't creeping in!

My training partner is the same way. 54 yrs old and still squatting 4+ bench 4+ and DL 6+. Just trains reps, goes heavy when he feels he can and stays injury free that way. Sounds like Wendler is right on in saying - take your time and grow. It's a life long pursuit.
But in a little bit of defense of the younger guys, if you just keep getting stronger and making crazy gains everytime you touch the weights - its probably real tough to back off.
Nice benching tho. Really tough stuff. Very impressed.

Thanks guys. I did my first powerlifting back in the early 70's then got married, had kids and worked a lot. Even though I have always lifted while raising a family I really was too busy to put the proper time in. I credit still having good joints because of not lifting super heavy for years.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. dbunch-I am planning to do American Challenge. My goal isto drop down to 198# ( current weight 210.2). I turn 60 in May and want to try a set a new world record for that age group. Current record is 372# which should not be a problem, I just have to make weight.
