Back from the dentist and I feel pretty good. The drugs haven't worn off yet so I may have a somewhat different opinion later. This may present a opportunity for an accelerated weight loss program. If I feel OK later I'll give the bench a try. No squats until I'm done with the pain killers. Not too wise to stagger with a couple of hundred pounds on the back, but pressing in the cage should be safe enough.

July 14
Weight 221
Bench
8 @ 155 6 @ 175 4 @ 190 3 @ 205 2 @ 215 1 @ 225 4 @ 190
Tonnage 5100
I had to do this. After the meet I kept wondering if I should have done 240 as my last lift. With the interruption of my normal routine because of the dental surgery I though this would be a good time to give the 240 Buckeye a shot. As I was told It is a grinder. I struggled with the last rep of the first 190. I struggled with the last 205. I ground out the last 215. It was sllooww but steady. The 225 was nothing but determination but it went up. The last set of 190 was all effort with the last being the longest rep I have ever completed.. I fought for every quarter inch. What a workout. Man whoever thought of this was serious.

There are several different aspects of strength - explosive strength, rep strength, absolute strength. All these are important to the overall picture. The great thing about the Buckeye bench routine is that it tests each of these strengths. If you had gotten the 225 after having failed on the last rep with 205, you would have identified a possible weakness. If further results bear this out, you know what you need to work on. The fact that you had roughly the same degree of difficulty with each set shows you to be fairly well balanced.

It's pretty tough to follow 3speed and be able to add any insight, but I just want to say awesome lifting withe 240 Buckeye. It's an excellent and challenging training routine.

Weight 220
Incline bench
5 @ 95 5 @ 115 5 @ 140 5 @ 160 2 @ 185
Squat
5 @ 135 5 @ 170 5 @ 205 5 @ 240 5 @ 270
High pull

Overestimated the IB weight insead of acctually finding a 5rm. The squats went well but I felt shakey after the forth set, must be the heat, but last set went up well.

SWEEEEEET!!! Excellent squatting, way to hang tough!
Chalk the IB up to experience, work out the details later. You now know 160 is there, try it in 5# increments to get your true 5rm, just don't try it all in one workout. :')
NICE workout Lysimacus!
God Bless!

Thanks Dopar, I found the cause of the shackieness, it was the anti biotic I was taking for the dental work. Doc took me off and I feel fine.
This week has been super hectic. My wife and I are teaching pre-teens at our church VBS each night this week. The kids have been pretty good but the weather has been brutal.
I see on your log you're well on your way to a good showing at Nats.

What do you mean by "snatch grip"? Is this the same thing I call "double overhand"? (both hands over the top, instead of alternating)

Thanks Chancey, The most I ever did was back in april just before I swictched to the 5x5, it was 22950 my comments were as follows:
"Bearly finnished the workout. The Dumbbell weight was just a hair too heavy. I had to stop and rest for a few seconds at about the 12th rep before finnishing the set. High pull was butal."
One of the reasons I like the 5x5 is the weight scheme keeps me from such nonsense.
Williamson,
The snatch grip is the wide grip used for doing the olympic lift by the same name. My hands are index finger over the outside ring on the bar. It really works the back and gives the legs the same strech as working off plates or using only 35# plates.

That is a COOL concept on the snatch grip! I don't know that I will use it myself, but there's a really tall guy at the gym that just started deadlifting (for fitness, not competition) and I'll pass this along to him. Thanks for sharing that! WAY cool!

I only use the SGDL every other week because I have to drop the max about 10-20%. I'm alternating it on a periodic basis with the DL with 35's at normal working weight. I'm expecting that this will give my uper back a good workout and stretching the legs while relieving the weight a little so I can keep at the DL each week.
My $.02.

The VBS thing can wipe you out ! my wife and I did it a few weeks back, this Avalanche Ranch thing, had a bull to ride etc... it got painful getting bucked off so many times !
Great stuff on your lifting, stick with it !

I hope that you all were riding a mechanical bull. I rode the real thing when I was in OK learning to shoe horses. It rode me much longer than I rode it.

Squat 3@280 then 8@205 on 3 minutes rest? Your conditioning ought to be pretty substantial! Nice squatting, benching, everything, in SPITE OF not enough rest. Good call on not pushing it, but look at it this way. Look at what you DID DO on an off day! Everyone has off days, but when your off day is the equivalent of last month's good day, there's improvement involved!

Yeah, I'm going to chalk it up to just one of those days. Next workout is a new day.
Dopar, Your comments on my conditioning coming from the guy who squats heavy after 7 hours of soccer mean alot! Thanks.
