Thanks a lot guys, that stuff is too funny. I love it.
OK, went in for a quick workout tonight.
Bench 135 x 8, 175 x 22
Seated Rows 8 x 150, 8 x 170, 8 x 190, 6 x 210
Lat Pull Downs 8 x 130, 8 x 150
20 Decline Crunches
Dead lift
8 x 135, 8 x 185, 5 x 225 2 x 5 x 275, & 3 x 315
I had what is probably a stupid thought tonight, and I'd like some opinions. My reps competition is next Saturday, the 17th. I can still bench 300 raw. How bad do you think it would affect my reps performance if competed in the raw bench first?
Stupid, huh???

NOT stupid! I've seen numerous guys and gals do it, and the majority of the time, someone who competes in both wins both.
Just to keep it real, you have been training FOR the reps comp. My 2 cents only, but it's a little late in the game to change the plan. Yours is the only decision that counts, though.
Either way, 22 reps is quick? Man it takes me 3 sets to count that high! Nice workout, and great deadlifting!

I second Doug! Moreover, the is some evidence to suggest a "rebound" effect after going from heavier weights to lighter ones...i.e.: the obvious...the lower weight feels lighter.
I think the key is How much time will you have between the two? You don't want to finish up your lift at 300 and then go right into the reps...you should wait probably 30 minutes at least.
I have the same problem coming up, I want to do both at the next meet, but my opener is probably going to put me in the last flight, which means I won't have a lot of time to recuperate before the reps contest.

TP made an EXCELLENT point! You might contact the meet director and see how many lifters, how many flights for the 1RM, also how many for the bench for reps. If there are bunches of guys lifting after you obviously it gives you more recoup time.
I'm going to reiterate that the only decision that counts belongs to Rockman181!
God Bless.

Thanks for the insights, guys.
I didn't ask how many lifters, but I did ask the format. It is a full power meet, with bench being the usual second event. The bench for reps comes after the deadlift, so I think there should be plenty of time to recover.
I think I'll go into the gym tomorrow, work up to 300, and then do legs. After I'm done, I'll try doing the bencjhing for reps and see how I do.
As you can see from my log, I have not made any progress at all in increasing my number of reps. I'm going to think about it.

That's a nice workout, Rocky... especially considering your age, weight and medical condition. I'd be lucky to get 1x315 myself and I'm 33 and 210! I would do the bench meet and the repetition contest. APA meets (as you know) can be long, drawn-out affairs. After the benching, there will probably be a 15 minute break until the deadlifts. The deadlifting itself will take another 20-30 minutes. You might have a good 45 plus minutes between events. Even if it were only 20 minutes, it would still be doable... I say go for it!

Excellent prep work rockman. Keep it smart and simple. You bench more than 95% of the young guns at my local gym. Nuff said.

Thanks gentlemen.
John, I heard that the dead lift flight at their last meet had 26 lifters. It was 20 minutes between attempts for them. You're right, though, his meets are terribly inefficient.
Thank you Chancey. It's just a little difficult because my best RAW lift at a competition was 335. My best RAW gym lift was 345, which was last December. It's disappointing how fast we deteriorate. However, I am grateful to be able to lift at all, never mind the 315. I should be dancing and singing with joy.

Hey Rocky, I lifted in the January meet in Wallingford. There were 22 lifters in a single flight for the deadlift. I think there was maybe 15 minutes between attempts. I went 405-435-445. The 445 was a meet PR and was just 10 pounds shy of my best gym pull. Basically, you've gotta adapt to the timetable! I can't believe how well you lift at your age (and bodyweight)... I only hope to be still pushing the iron when I'm in my 50s... Being 33 right now makes that seem a long way off! I'm looking forward to meeting you at Saturday's meet. If you can't spot me then I will look out for you and introduce myself. Rest up and good luck!

I just got back from the competition, and I ended up doing 25 reps. I didn't do the bench meet because I was asked to be a judge. One of the scheduled referees couldn't make it, due to the snow storm we had last night.
It was for the best, as he changed the format. The reps competition came right after the bench competition. There was a 242 there that got 31 reps, after he benched. He opened with a730 attempt, and took a second attempt with 750. He never locked out either, but it was clear that he was very strong.
This week I'm going to start a new workout; a flat backed progression. I'm going to start with sets of 8 at 225, and work my way back up for 8 weeks. If that works, I plan to do a 6 week shirted cycle. Wish me luck.
Thanks to everyone for all of the support.
God Bless!

Hey, Rocky... Great job! 25 reps is three more than you were getting in the gym, you gotta be proud of that. Good luck with your new cycle...

Many thanks to all of you. Doug, "Don Mannion style lifting" ?? I wish. I had a great time at the meet. It was nice to have the time to just watch people lift. Flat backed bench: warm up, then 4 x 8 x 225 Dumbbell bench: 8 x 80, 8 x 90, 9 x 100 Cable push-downs: 10 x 150, 10 x 200, 10 x 220

I was debating whether I wanted to share some terrible news. I think I will only so that some young lifters might learn from this.
A 24 year old man was killed at a local gym this afternoon. I don't have a lot of details yet, but he was benching alone, and was found dead with the back across his throat. I don't know how much weight he had on the bar, or what he was doing, but benching alone is dangerous business. I know guys that have lost teeth, collapsed lungs, but never anything like this.
It's a horrible thing for everyone involved, and a grave reminder to all of us to be careful, and respect the weight.
His name was Josh; please include his family in your prayers.
