Hey Guys I'm new to this board and I have a question. I'll be competing in a raw meet in 8 weeks. Along with competing raw in the bench I'm going to do body weight for reps. I'll be competing in the masters 55-59 in the 220 lb. weight class. Currently my bwt. is about 216 and I can hit 225 for about 20 reps. I hoping to get my bwt. reps up to 25+ by the time the meet rolls around. I have never trained for such an event like this so I was hoping someone could give me some tips for training for an event like this. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Animal! I never train for reps, so I can't offer any tips, but I would like to say welcome to the forum! I see this is your first post here, so I'm glad you are here and posting. I hope you find this forum as friendly and helpful as I have.
God Bless. Doug P.

Get a familiar with that weight as possible... every week, since you're only 8 weeks out, try to increase your max rep by 1... pretend it's your competition every time you get under that bar, and go for it on your first set..
afterwards, just keep lifting. Also, you can try to increase 5 lbs a week and do the same number of reps as the week before. Then the week before your competition, drop back to 225lbs to see what gains you've have. This will give you a good idea of how you'll do when it counts...
Good luck!

You could also go to about 205 and rep up past 30 to get your endurance up. Do that for seven weeks then you will have the lactic acid problem all taken care of. I dont usually compete for reps but we play around at the gym sometimes so I have been doing alot of thinking about it. I will give it a go as well in the next eight weeks to see how I respond.

Just curious when you do body weight for reps, is that with a pause on every rep?

No. It's touch and go with full extension on each rep.

When I was preparing for college I knew that doing reps with 225 for reps was going to be one of the man tests that I would have to over come in football. I would work out 4 times a week. I use a speed day and a heavy day. I would do my regular work out for bench say tuesday and then speed day on Friday. I would work reps with 225 and added some 15lbs chains to the sides and added a 2 second pause at the bottom. Doing this for 8 weeks depending on what your max bench is right now mine was 385 I nailed 26 none stop touch and go reps. I got 27 off the chest but no lock out. I also would work at about 80% of what i used on my heavy day to do tricep pushdowns and also military presses. The chain thing helped me alot but take for granted I was only 18 the time of training.

wow, 225 for 20? dang bro! I have never tried that but have seen a few guys compete in that category. Seeing a 200lb guy rep 225 more than 15 times is amazing to me. I can only get it for 10 to 12 tops and i weigh 210lbs. lol Keep us posted, sounds like a fun training routine! good luck!

I weigh 165lbs and bench about 370 raw but I know when I burn out with 225 I usually do about 20 to 25 depending on that day. I have never tried to do my own weight for reps. I will have to try it some time.

I personally think that it takes alot more endurance than brut strength. You really if your going to work for reps need to work with that weight and get used to doing it alot. Its kind of like going to a factory and seeing the guys put on tires for a car. You can tell the new guys from the pros. You must train to overcome muscle fatigue. Also trying to breath every 5 reps helps to keep the ox going.

media.putfile.com/Belk-225The above link shows Michael Belk doing 225 for reps. He got 59 in a competition after competing for a max. It looks like you have to rep fast and get them in before the lactic acid builds up.
