For those of you that are not on Facebook. There was some talk on the 100% Raw wall about adding the strict press as an additional event, like strict curls. Apparently Raw Canada Has added the lift and in 2015 we may see it as an option for meet directors to add to the competitions along with strict curls and rep challenges. I was wondering what people thoughts were here on the topic.

I think the strict overhead press is a true test of strength. It used to be one of the olympic lifts but was removed from competition because of safety concerns. Competitors were turning it into a standing bench press and it was feared that they would injure their backs by doing so.
I just went over to the Canadian site and read their rules for the event. They have taken steps to eliminate that concern, but I don't think they have gone far enough. I would really like to see one rule added - the head/face must remain forward during the execution of the lift.
If the lift can be incorporated safely, I would definitely support it. I would actually prefer to see the overhead press over the curl.

I’m a big fan of the “odd lifts” but I’m not sure how I feel about 100% raw adding lifts to Powerlifting meets. I remember a few years back when it seemed that with only a few exception most meet were push-pulls with strict curl. There just weren’t many full power meets being offered. I almost think I would like them to be kept segregated from the actual PL meet; either have them the day before or the day after the actual meet. AAU started having a Feats of strength event with some of their powerlifting events, Farmers carry, Tire Flip, etc. The eventually split it off into its own events.

I think we are on the same page Dan. I am one of the strange people who actually enjoys watching a powerlifting meet, but some of them can get too long even for me. The inclusion of other lifts would just make the problem worse. That's one reason - other than the fact that just don't like curls - that I said I would prefer to see the O/H press in a contest instead of just adding it. I like the fact that Paul has put the curls on a separate day at the Worlds this year.
I have seen a few meets where "odd lifts" were contested on a separate day, but it seemed that the only people there were the competitors. The "odd lifts" need to be a separate event or just left to Strongman competitions.
And, I totally agree with you on the full meets. I was one of the ones a few years back before I left the Fed for a while who lobbied hard to get more "Full Power" meets on the agenda. I generally run 2 meets a year myself - one push/pull and one full power. I can tell you that the push/pulls are much easier to run in every way. You have to be really committed to the sport and have a tremendous amount of help to run a full meet. On top of all of that, I normally make a few bucks off of the push/pull which I use to buy lunch/snacks for my judges and spotters whereas I am lucky to break even doing a full meet.
