Just joined and wanted to take the opportunity to say 'howzit' to everyone here and introduce myself.
I'm Esseff from Cape Town in South Africa. I'm married and have a son. Started lifting at age 20 but stopped at 31 when I fell over while squatting and suffered a slipped disc. My bests at the time were 225kg squat, 140kg bench and 240kg deadlift. After my injury I stopped lifting completely for a few years due constant pain (and a bit of fear of re-injury, to be honest). Now I'm 36 and started again 2 1/2 months ago. Really enjoying being back under the iron.
I hope to pick your collective brains for any and all information. Powerlifting is a rarity here so the bulk of my knowledge I glean from the internet and places like this. Hope to compete in December.

Welcome aboard and good luck with your goals.
We have a somewhat similar history. I took a few years off after breaking my lower back in '97 when I was 32. The hardest part of getting back was the mental aspect - scared of injuring my back. I got back under the iron, stuck with it and have been fairly successful. Just stay with it and you will be glad you did.

I played rugby at University for a couple of years. Haven't played in quite some time but I still really like the sport and try to follow it as closely as I can which is difficult to do in the states.
I'm looking forward to the World Cup next year and I think your boys have a legitimate chance to beat out New Zealand.
I actually think that a couple of the Northern Hemisphere teams might surprise some people too. Specifically England and Wales. We shall see!

England are definitely stronger in rugby than soccer. Wales too to a point. But honestly rugby is usually dominated by the Bokke and All Blacks. My money's on the Springboks.

Yea, no question it should come down to an All blacks v. Springboks final, but then there's always the Aussies too. Never know.... Funny story: We took our daughter to the beach a few weeks back and she's down by the water playing with my son (ok, he was babysitting her- he's 14 and she's 3.5....lol) and all of a sudden she breaks out in what looks like a half dance/half karate routine, and I said to my wife: "we either have the goofiest female toddler on the face of the planet, or our daughter is somehow channeling the All Blacks doing the Haka". I was cracking up and when we got home, I showed her what the Haka is on Youtube and she was totally mesmerized and tried to do it along with them. Might have a future rugger if not a kid that's totally off her rocker. hahaha.
