Here is a general question for everyone. How far are you willing to travel to compete? I consider myself lucky in that 4 of the 5 event’s I do annually are less than an hour drive from my home. Only one requires me to travel about 5 hours. When I do travel I generally try to find someone else to travel with to share expenses.

I actually hesitated to respond to this because I approach this game so much differently than most.
I don't train to compete. I train for the challenge of the next 5 pounds. I only compete when a meet that I know will be well run fits into my training schedule and is being held within 3-4 hours of me. For me, a meet is like a long training session coupled with a family reunion of sorts - I go more to catch up with old friends and make new ones than to compete. I have travelled farther to compete but it was tied in with a vacation. I competed in the Worlds in Melbourne, FL in 2007 - an 8hr drive one way - and jumped on a ship out of Cape Caneveral the next morning for a 5 day cruise to the Bahamas.

In 2010 I traveled to Florida for the RAW Worlds. Then this year I flew to Vegas for the RAW Worlds. I will drive to Raleigh on Feb 08 for the State meet. Its a about 5 hours one way. Not only me, but we are taking our team of 16 lifters to Raleigh. That is actually 26 head with wife's and family members. It's nice to lift with that large of a support group.

I ask because I know so many people have no choice but to travel to a meet. I’m just amazed at people who get up at 0 dark 30, drive 3 or 4 hours, compete, the turn around and drive back home afterwards.
3speed, I completely get what you are saying. After you have been in a few meets you start seeing the same faces over and over again, you get to know people and it does become like a family reunion. One of the things I like best about meets is catching up with people.

I normally stick to meets within an hour of home unless they're linked with a vacation or a work trip.

I’m lucky in that there are 6 or 7 local meets near me every year. By local I mean less than 50 miles. We have 3 - 100% RAW, 1 AAU, 1 – USSF, and 1 – Unsanctioned that happen pretty much like clockwork every year. LoL – the down side is I’m compelled to compete in all of them.
I have one meet that I travel to every year; it’s an AUU meet in Orchard, Nebraska. It is about 170 miles North West of me. It’s actually one of my favorite because there are usually 4 or 5 high school teams that compete every year. It’s cool to try to identify the up and coming powerlifters.

Well, as you can see from my other posts..there are not many lifters on this site from georgia and not many meets within 4 hours from where I am at...kinda sucks....will make do though...

That is a good point. I can tell you for sure that I only compete so much because of all the local events. If I had to drive 4 or more hours one way for every event I would be a lot choosier about competing. I think that keeps a lot of people away. I would still compete but it would be a lot less.
