Has anyone ever made their own protein bars? Is it worth it? Was it edible? Just curious, seems to me that if you made them yourself they would be healthier and definitely cheaper.

Once upon a time I tried this due to the fact that $$ is an issue, but I've learned one of my main weapons in proper eating is convenience and taste. I still prepare most of my meals, but I gave up trying to make my own bars and drinks.
For years I'd buy WPC80 and mix my own sweetener and unsweetened baking cocoa. It was TONS cheaper and I got the mixture down to where the taste was good. However, it simply became such a hassle. I found a good bulk deal on Muscle Milk about 6 months ago and decided to go that route.
It can be done, but the hassle is what I'm trying to avoid these days. Two kids and lots of fun to be had leaves less time for mixing and preparing food.
Still, if you're one who can spare the time and don't mind trial and error until you've nailed a mixture down, it can work.

I'm curious how protein powder bakes. I wonder if it loses anything.

I've wondered that too. I have heard hideous whispered rumors of "de-naturing" (not exactly sure what happens when that happens).
Once in a while I'd add some WPC80 to a mixture of sugar-free instant pudding. It ended up being O.K.
I've mixed it with oatmeal. That didn't come out so good.
I suppose it all depends on what you're willing to choke down.

Hiya Chancey, I tried making them a few times. My wife has since barred me from getting within 20 feet of the kitchen. I have never found a good combination of getting both taste and consistency down correctly. Had a few soupy batches. I stick to the shakes only now . BB.com has a bunch of recipes if you're feeling brave

Very chuckle worthy Big. It paints quite a picture and I somehow think I might end up in the same boat. Basically, I need to get my protein but without all the extra calories. I was shocked at my last weigh in (good thing I'm in the 308s) and I am by no means ready to become a SHW. Losing weight has become more of a priority over strength as of right now. I can't beleive I said that!

what i like is mixing some vanilla icecream (for creaminess), peanut butter, chocolate protein powder (i use maximus by atlarge. it's some good stuff), and milk. it's like a reese's only liquid. full of protein and great if you're lookin to gain weight.

well, you can use skim milk and not put ice cream in and it's pretty healthy

It is interesting to hear all of the replies. I've told my wife for a while that we ought to be able to come up with some recipe that is "decent." As somebody said, "depends on what you are willing to choke down." I am less picky than others on the taste. I hope to do some experimenting in the next couple of months. I'll post it if I find a recipe that is good enough to make it worth sharing.

I have some trouble getting enough protein but milk is the easiest thing I guess. A gallon should provide you with about 130 grams of protein. Even half of that is still a lot given you eat good meals the rest of the day.

Oh Wow, Now I'm hungry! That sounds wonderful... I use 2 Scoops Strawberry, 1 Cup Oatmeal, 1 Md-Lg Banana, & 16oz Skim Milk with ice. It's like a Strawberry/Banana Smoothie ;D
