Hey Greg,
Just out of curiosity, what did you weigh when you pulled that 500 in the video??

John,
My weight that day was 255 lbs. I had two 5 lb. plates on either side as well as two 2.5 lb. collars on the bar...so the weight on bar was really 510 lbs. or a double bodyweight deadlift.
With the front squat and deadlift I'm doing workouts with 500 lbs. so I rounded down. 550 X 10 coming later this month. Strongman training begins in July...thus the reason for the higher reps and volume. I will be Deadlifting/single event competition with the WABDL in Sept. & Nov. I'm looking forward do representing 100% RAW at the 2009 RAW Unity Meet at the end of January 2009.

Cool!!
So when you start training for strongman, how are you going to structure your workouts?? Just curious, because as of late, I've been hammering away on my military press and squat in an effort to bring them up and train a little more a little more like the strongman events. The press is moving along really well. The squat is crawling up slowly.

John, Strongman training is just that...I'll train 2 to 3 events on Sat. or Sun.
Gym work is twice per week. Normally Tue. & Thur.
The best way to get ready for Strongman is to train events.
There is little carry over from gym work...you can build your core strength...which is the first step, however, before you can run with 600 lbs. in the frame carry you have to be able to pick it up. The only way to get the speed and technique down is to do the events.
In 2002, at my first Strongman Competition...I thought I was going to have a heart attack after trying to flip this 800 + tire 10 times.
I think I got like 8 flips and then needed oxygen.
My gym lifts were huge at the time...collective 2000 lb. Total. Didn't really matter. Guys that had trained the Tire Flip flew by me and some that had been doing it a while...were fine at the end...just a little winded...nothing major.
You don't have to be a great powerlifter to be a strongman... heck, Phil Pfister the 2006 WSM winner from WV showed that.
Scott Weech Jr. has done very well in crossing over...but he has not done the larger competitions. In order to place or win in those events your only option is to train those specific events leading in to the competition. Then you'll know where you're at and can shoot for PR's at the show.
In order to get to this point...you either need to invest a lot of money purchasing the different equipment or have access to a training facility or gym that has the equipment available.
I've been gathering equipment now since 2002. We have a complete Powerlifting and Strongman training facility. It really made a difference for me in 2006. I took 2007 off from competition to heal up and get rid of several injuries. In 2008 I can report I'm 100%.
I'm excited to see how things go for me this year...at least the training has become fun again...and not as painful.
Keep up with the squats...both front and back. If your not getting them right or they hurt...lighten the weight. The main point is to stick with them and increase over time. Squats develop not only your core but are your wheels to do whatever you need done in the world of strength. Best of Luck in your training John, Stay Strong & Train RAW - Greg
