Hi everybody,
Since I recently decided to start preparing for my first ever PL meet, I thought it would be a good idea to keep a public log of my best tries.
I'm 43 and I'm going to compete in raw bench with shirted guys on IPF BC Winter Open 2008, 198 category. My current bw is 184lb.
I started my comeback (from my old-days gym training) in May 2007, when on the first workout I benched 200x10.
So yesterday after warm-up I benched [raw] 275lb x 9 reps, touch-and-go. Last time I tried was Nov 6, when I did 265x10.
Next bench is on Nov 27.

Looking forward to seeing your progress, Victor. I myself have just gotten back into the gym, it's a hard road but the rewards are worth the initial frustration.

Thank you all guys!!!
Yes it's exciting to see more and more people here. Too bad there is no raw federation here in Canada but it's ok for now. Just found an announcement on bcpowerlifting.ca about 2008 BCPA Winter Open in Vancouver on February 10, 2008. I'm going to participate, since I live there (and kick some shirted asses, lol).

First, glad to see you started a log! Second, 275x9 was a BENCH workout? Good googly moogly! Third, the 6 sets with 280 is EXCELLENT!
A question about today's bench: do you work up to say, 5x10, or are you planning to cycle in more poundage, less reppage? Just wondering.
Mighty fine benching Victor!
God Bless.

Good stuff, Victor. I love the video with no spotter. Used to find that the threat of the weight crushing my chest made me try harder!

Hi everybody, Yesterday I did raw bench press, like always: 285x8 www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mDcOJmepqY (I expected to make 9 or 10, but it's alright, it's better than nothing...) 285x5 (failed with 6th rep... Duckies, that hurts.) 285x4 (F@#%! I hate my weakness and I hate 285 pounds...) Okay, I give up. Just can't go on with this weight. What to do, what to do... Why not to try so-called pause bench? Never done that before... but will have to on a meet... so let's go! 230x5 (nice and slow, 1 sec pause on the chest and 1 sec after locking up arms. What a relief! I love this weight. Could do more.) 230x5 (the same as above) 230x5 (the same as above) some squat ... Well, not exactly kicking donkey, as I thought it could be tonight. Maybe next time! Viktor

No, I don't feel old, lol. How old are you, williamson?
bigarm,
Thank you for your welcoming! Yep, I used to work with reverse pyramid all the time back to 90x. It helped me to max 160kg (170 arching)@82kg in 1992. Sure I will try this method again!

Dang, Viktor, it takes me two sets to get to 8 reps with 285! SWEET work!
Bigarm is one heckuva bencher, his tips on breating and leg drive are impeccable. Maybe, just maybe, try those things while adjusting to the pause, that'll be enough to take you to the next level.
170kg arching, a question about that, was your butt still on the bench? Some folks refer to arching as a back bending up but tail still on the bench, and I've heard what I call "bridging" when the tail comes off the bench. Either way it's still a right good pile more than what I'm benching.
:')
God Bless.

170kg arching, a question about that, was your butt still on the bench? No, it was a REAL arching , with feet on the bench. Btw, it helped a lot to push flat benching as well. Viktor

Victor, Just saw your video. BREATH MAN BREATH!!!!! Don't hold your breath. Use your feet to drive your shoulders in to the bench. You are big time strong!! If you ever learn form!!! LOOK OUT!!!! I will try to pay attention to my breath next time, thanks. I'm not sure I understood a sentence about feet driving shoulders. Do you have a link to a good video example of such form? A good article with detailed explanation? Viktor

The two things I can suggest, Get the 2005 Bench press championship video. Watch Paul Bossi. Great form. Second I could walk you through it here on your posting. If you teach your self on getting into the rack and loading up. YOU WILL BE BEYOND AWESOME. Sounds good. Thank you!

Bench press night:
160x12 210x5 260x1 paused (1 sec on chest, 1 sec above) 290x3 paused with the same style as above. Failed with 4th. Couldn't even move it from the chest. Uh-oh.
The rest sets were touch and go: 290x4 290x3 290x3 290x2 290x2
Some lame squat: 190x9 190x9 190x9 190x9

4 sets of 9 at 190 is not lame in my book.

Echo Lysimacus. Squatting PERIOD is not lame!
NICE bench work Viktor! I cringe at the thought of LOADING 290 on the bench!
God BLess.
