Greetings all. My name is Meek and I am interested in trying out power lifting. A little background. Been lifting on and off for many years. Hurt my knees badly a couple of years ago, but through the use of glucosamine and riding the bike they are markedly better. Still can't really squat, but can leg press and deadlift. Started deadlifting about 6 months ago and I really enjoy it. Got a buddy doing it too. Tore my rotator cuff in BJJ (brazilian jiu jitsu) about a year ago and still am afraid to bench heavy (probably can't anyway) Can someone give me an idea of what kind of numbers a natural raw(?) (no suits, belts, straps, etc) 200-220 pounder should be able to bench and deadlift so I (we) won't be embarrassed at a meet? Thanks.

Hey, Meek. There ain't no embarassment in this fed! We're all just happy to be competing on a completely level playing field. You can go to the home page www.rawpowerlifting.com and look up records and meet results to see what kind of lifts folks turn in. Never, and I repeat NEVER compare yourself to the records, just the meet results. Records are held by guys like Nick Minneti, Will Lynch, Paul, and David Wilson. :') When you try out a comp, post your results! God Bless. Doug P.

yeah, if you compare yourself to the record holders, it can and will discourage you. I am the same way, I try my best to focus on me not anyone else.

That's right! Take anyone's numbers when they were just starting to powerlift... apart from a few genetic freaks, most people started out at the bottom and worked their way to the top. Patience and consistency go a long way in powerlifting. This is a sport for the tortoise rather than the hare... I will list some numbers (just as a general guideline)... Someone just beginning to compete in the 198 or 220 class would be considered decent with a 275-300 bench and a 400-450 deadlift... I consider myself quite average and my first two meets went: 331-275-408=1014 and 360-285-425=1070. I am in the 198 class, by the way...
