for squat, all we have at my gym is a squat rack with no safety devices on it, like a power cage or squat rack, It is just to hold the bar between sets and a smith machine. the people taht work out with me are not always the most reliable spotters, I was wondering if the smith machine when I go heavy is good to use so taht I can get heavy and be safer.

Depends what your goals are. If you do squats just for conditioning or bodybuilding the smith machine, in absence of a squat rack, is ok... but still not that great. For powerlifting, absolutely do not use the smith machine for squats - it ruins your ability to develop a natural squat groove, and steals all the benefits of balance the bar on your own (core development, etc.). You might want to instead do a squat system that has you doing no fewer than 5 to 3 reps. This should allow you to handle a weight that you can rack without any problems. Typically olympic lifters never squat inside a cage or rack they just unrack from squat stands do there move (front squats or back squats) and then step forward and re-rack. Have you suggested to the gym owners about the benefits of them owning a power rack? I suppose you could also get creative and bring two benches on either side of where you're squatting and use those as safety catches.

What!
If they won't get one, then you get one. If you can't get one, make one. If you can't make one, then just do what you're doing and don't fail! I'll train for a whole power cycle and never fail a single lift the whole time.
Your workout weights can't possibly be in the right ranges if you're missing lifts. Don't be intimidated, it's only gravity! Gravity is the weakest force in the universe!

no rack to squat with?? how many times have you failed squatting anyway...in general, as long as you concentrate, you should pretty much know when you arent going to get the next rep...besides, most powerlifters dont go to failure anyway AFAIK Like Nick said, I usually go months without going to failure or missing a lift on squats you can always dump the bar off the back oh, check these vids out...you mention squatting without a rack and only mediocre spotters?? how about no rack, no spotters, no belt, no knee wraps?? media.putfile.com/Ironmind_1993_Dimasmedia.putfile.com/chakarov-1993-olympic-trianing-media.putfile.com/1993_Tournefierthat 295kilo squat is right at 650....no spotter, no rack, no belt, no wraps...no ammonia, no psyche-up, no headbutting, no slapping
