I was thinking about lifting in the World Championships in Raleigh, NC in February. Are belts allowed? If so, what are the dimensions? Is there a qualifying process for this meet or is it open to anyone. I may have missed this info on the website. Thanks!

Yes powerlifting 4 inch belts are allowed. Good luck with training and Happy New Year.

Bill, Yes belts are allowed in our federation. They cannot be more than 4" in diameter. You do not have to qualify for this meet. It is open to anyone thats wishes to lift in it as long as they get their stuff in by the deadline. Good luck and hope to see you lift on Feb 11th with us.

Thanks for the response, Paul. I am a Master (45-49) lifetime drug-free lifter and I do not use strength supplements, either. I've been competing since 1978, and most of those years with single-ply gear, although I occassionally compete with just belt and wraps. I would love to come to a meet with just a belt. I'll be shooting for Feb. 11th.

Are belts really necessary in he bench press? I feel a belt suppresses the abs and by using a belt you keep your abs weak. I don't use a belt or wrist wraps. Using wrist wraps I feel will weaken your tendons. Am I off base on this.

Hey, Bostoncream.
I'm not much of a bencher, so I can't speak to the technical aspects. I use the belt as the last step of my mental preparation. I know when the belt clicks, it's on! I guess you could say it's just part of my routine.
I doubt that helped any, it's just my two cents.

Hey, Charley. Again, I can't speak to the highly technical aspects. The belt I use is a 20-year old, 4" great old thick one. That's about all I can tell you. No one has said anything about it yet.
God Bless. Doug P.

i've experimented with wrist wraps and i must say that the don't affect your lift. although i could see why older lifters would prefer them. they do support your wrists, afterall, when i get old and decrepit i may need them as well :-P
