I would say it depends on how painful it is, a while back I had tendonitis in my left elbow which was so bad it was really painful just to push a door open. I took almost 6 months off and gradually started doing very light close grip benches whilst wearing protective elbow sleeves, I have eliminated all triceps extensions from my training and although not 100 % my elbows are much better now.

I dealt with tendinosis in my left forearm for almost a year. It got so bad that I dropped my coffee cup one day - that was just too much. I found a chiro who was certified in Graston technique. The treatments weren't exactly pleasurable but they did work. He combined Graston with a green laser and had me at about 95% after a month.
