I would like to know who is coming to the World Bench Press Championships this year? Please drop me a line as I am trying to prepare for the awards. I know the deadline is far away but I need to order the awards now and they are real expensive so I need to order bulk to get a good price. The total awards cost will be over $8500 this year. Top 5 places will get swords mounted on plaques and 6-10th place will recieve eagles mounted on a marble base.

John, That sounds awesome. Do they plan on lifting also? I would love to see them lift and get this meet upto 150-200 lifters. Everyyear this meets grow and I think this year will be the best ever. Got about 35 entries already and many calls and lots of e-mails. I will see you then.

The north star pride powerlifting team is coming. The mayadan,NC chapter and the Greenville,SC chapter will be represented. Greenvill chapter is bringing 3 (2 male and 1 female) and the mayadan chapter should be bringing a few. It sounds like a lot of fun and no gear to worry about.

Yeah, Awesome baby, and I was only spotting!
I've already been through all the "nice to meet you" stuff, so I'd just like to say to North Star Pride, RawDogs, and Church of Christ, incredible job on the lifting! Best I recall, NSP not counting all the teenagers, had at least 4 1st places and a preacher with a new WR! The RawDogs and Church of Christ teams pretty much won everything else! I was completely blown away by Belks' 570 @ 275, and got chills at the 600 attempt! This was an incredible experience, the trophies were the absolute coolest, and the meet was run really well!
(A little side note for two guys: A Jew, a Buddhist, and a Christian walk into a bar.....) :')

Bud, likewise here. Paul had already given me high expectations about you, and meeting you in person, you far exceeded them! That chat we had first thing Saturday, I felt like I had known you for years! The pleasure was all mine.
Look forward to seeing you in February.

Good morning, I live 200 miles from Raleigh and have never entered any type of weight-lifting contest. However....I have been following the rawpowerlifting website and am interested in the February contest. I realize I would have no chance to win but I think I would enjoy the experience. First question...I don't want to embarrass myself - I will have turned 40 and should be just under 198 lbs (40-44 & 198lb weight class) - I would only compete in the bench press where my max is about 300lbs. While I realize this is probably not a competitive max - would it be embarrassing or a waste of time? Also, could you direct me to the rules - specifically I don't normally practice the 'pause' and would want to ensure I practice correct form prior to the meet and I think I recall reading that a 'singlet' must be worn - I don't own anything like that - is shorts and t-shirt acceptable attire? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Curtis Smith

Absolutely not an embarrasment nor a waste of time! Brother, you're talking about a 40 year old man who has never competed coming in and benching 1-1/2 times his body weight! That's not embarassing! That's pretty good in my book.
Have you spent much time on the records/results pages? You'll see huge swings in results from meet to meet. They give you more of a picture than the records page. You have to remember some of the records have stood for years. The guys who set them may not even compete with us any more.
I ordered a singlet from inzer and they got it to me in a week, about 35 bucks. You might could find a wrestling singlet at a local sporting goods outfit.
Paul, Bud, or someone else can probably speak to your other questions.
Glad you've come on board!
God Bless. Doug P.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm placing my application form in the mail tomorrow. I'm very nervous but anxious to get this "first" meet behind me. Hopefully it will not be my last.

Bill, all I can say to that is "Amen!" :')
Just to kind of piggyback on a point Bill has made so clear, everyone I've ever talked to personally in this fed has been supportive of one another. No bashing or trashing. Sure most folks compete to win, but just as much to see cool stuff like 30-40 teenagers lifting, 65 year old women competing, folks setting PRs (who can forget that lady from the Worlds?) It's a great fed to compete in as far as that goes.
I read you'd put your app in the mail. Awesome! You can bet I'll be one of the folks pulling for you at the meet.
God Bless. Doug P.

Look at it this way, you are competing against one person, yourself! So you max rep for the day is a winner.
At 40, I was talking to several work out buddies and mentioned that someday I’d like to compete in a bench contest…. Just one time. Well, I was 40, how much longer do I need to get ready? So that year, at 198 lbs. my third attempt was successful at 325. Since then, I have about 10 contest behind me.
The past 2 years have not been kind to me so training was on and off again but I will be in Raleigh on Feb 11th. At 48, 205 lbs. (that would be the 220 class, forget the 198’s) I will be there and having a blast. If you think you are in the 300-lb. range, open with a sure bet…. Say 250. You will get the feel of the weight on an unfamiliar bench and trying not to miss the press and rack commands.
See you in Raleigh. Jim H.
