Hey Been lifting for a couple of years now and finally decided to do a meet. Going to the 100% percent Raw meet for the Southwest regional in Prescott, AZ. Wanted to get my form check on squat and deadlift. I will be competing at 165 (Down to 174 this morning from 180-ish) and hope to break a thousand. Here are the videos: Deadlift 405. Have hit a very ugly 425 since this. I am hoping to get to 450 or even above to take the record in my age group. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN6lJ6rkP9A315 squat attempt. Too high, I know. But good practice at depth and 335 is my goal for the meet. Just need a bit more strength on the bottom. Any tips to be more explosive? www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8uWIJY_QMQ 245 pause. The depth I do all of my work at. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN8XTCjazWE Couple questions: 1 How soon should I get a belt? I lift without one and want to wear one. Thinking about dropping the money for a rogue one as I intend to lift for a long time. 2 I do all of my squat training as low as the second video because our gym has an oly focus. Should I start training to hit right below parallel? What is a good way to rework that cue? How do you use stretch reflex if you do not go that deep? 3 Is the singlet below fully raw? Just making sure. Thanks! drive.google.com/file/d/0BxjMF4g6MmqKcHVkQmJHSklQbDczYXo1dVZ3UExWUlVuVGhR/view?usp=sharing

I lift without one and want to wear one. Thinking about dropping the money for a rogue one as I intend to lift for a long time: I'd buy a belt as soon as you can because they need to be broken in and they're legal in every fed, raw or otherwise. So why not wear one, right? Some people claim they get pounds out of their belt, others swear they dont and it's just a mental advantage, but no matter what, I dont think too many people will say a belt's gonna hurt you. I have a single prong Titan Toro which I love and I more recently bought an Inzer lever belt which I rarely use, but it is a good belt. 2 I do all of my squat training as low as the second video because our gym has an oly focus. Should I start training to hit right below parallel? What is a good way to rework that cue? How do you use stretch reflex if you do not go that deep? Recommendations here might vary, but my personal opinion is that there's no need to go ATG for powerlifting purposes. Make sure your hip crease goes below the top of your knee (once at your lowest point in the hole), and that's as deep as you need to go. Johnny Candido (google him if unfamiliar) did a really good piece on this about 6 months ago where he kind of learned the hard way that there is such a thing as going TOO deep for powerlifting. He gives an explanation of effectiveness and usage of stretch reflex in that video as well, I believe.3 As for the singlet: as long as it's a standard wrestling singlet, you're fine. It cant be made out of any material that resembles or functions like a squat suit. If the manufacturer specifically calls it a "singlet" that's a pretty good indication you're good. lol However, I will say that those socks are illegal, the ones in the singlet pick. Doctor Suess socks are not allowed in powerlifting. haha

I think Ryan is spot on but I will add my own opinion. He nailed it on the belt but I personally prefer the leaver belt over the buckle. They are easier to secure and open. The down side is if you tend to shift weight a lot that are a pain to adjust.
How deep do you go – of course at a minimum you need to hit depth, every time all the time. I don’t believe there is any good reason for a powerlifter to train at less than depth. At the other end of the spectrum I think it is a personal preference. I have a friend who all but sit on the floor when he squats. He tried to stop going so low but all it did was screw with his squat. I think as long as you are comfortable, hitting depth, and consistently squatting to the same depth you are fine. I’m 99% sure that singlet is legal. I don’t see any extra stitching or layered panels. And the material looks right.
I must however disagree on his call of the sox, I think the freakier the sox the better

Throw a belt on when the weight starts to get heavy.
Anything above parallel consistently will keep you from knowing where depth is. Squat like you compete. Squat bench and pull the SAME WAY EVERY TIME EVERY REP.
If this is your first meet, don't cut weight. Go in strong as possible. No one really cares what you weigh. Go in confident in your strength. Move the most amount of weight you can. Records don't mean anything. Doing your best means everything.
