I went out of town last week and I found a local gym to train in while I was on vacation. It was a nice place and it had what I needed. Most of the local boy that worked there were pretty healthy but I did notice one thing, no one there could squat to save their life. The best they got were half squats but most were quarter squats. And that was the people who actually did squats. Most of the people there kept talking about how bad squats and deadlifts were for you or said that they had a bad back and couldn’t do squats.

Yeah, Its the same at a gym I attend, Ive only ever saw one guy do a squat that would pass in a competition...As for deadlifting, Ive actually made progress getting some to deadlift...Heres a story about one guy...He always worked on his arms and wore small shirts with tight sleeves etc. and was always trying to get his arms bigger and asking what he should do. So, one day I told him that I saw a interview with Ronnie Coleman and he said he likes deadlifts because they add thickness and size to his biceps...Well, that guy stated deadlifting and its actually one of his favorite lifts now...

people dont do deadlifts or squats because its hard to do it right. its requires good form and people just lack the support muscles for them too. its core muscle that most people lack and if their form is wrong, their core takes heavy damage.
bench is the easiest to start at but everyone gets it wrong too. they just dont notice it. i got a lot of bouncers, bridge benchers, and half bros. i have not seem one person who have done it right at my gym. The Ymca. there is one guy. a bouncer. he goes wide grip. For a year now. i think he increase his bench by 25 to 30 lbs. thats pretty bad.
he does what the average heavy lifter does. plate jumps 8x135 8x225 4x315 (he bounces his rep here) 1x365 (and here) 8x225
hes now currently doing 8x135 8x225 6x315 2x385 8x225
im pretty sure hes the one who broke are cable machines. with his jerk movements on his triceps exercises. its been replace like 7 to 8 times already. i cant tell him no, hes close to my bench level. in 5 weeks he wont be though lol 435 is my goal. my lil 19 year old brother is gonna beat him too, my brother will join the 400 club in about 9 weeks i think.
since i been at the YMCA. for like a year now since aug 2011. im half his size and im not planning getting bigger. since that august. i went from 245 to 405, counting today. /flex i can pause with 400 on my chest. no wide grip

Dbunch: I know it's hard to find original bashes for commercial gym environments, and its easy to go on rants about curls in the squat rack, etc...but truth be told, the commercial experience scares me in how predictable it can be. Hades, this even goes for hardcore gyms in terms of stereotypes - shaved heads, music that is often "not your daddys' and beanie hats. The more current peeve of mine is guys wearing ball caps. Perhaps its sweat retention, otherwise, the sun shouldn't be an issue. I might begin wearing a viking helmet or sombrero.
At least you found a place that had what you needed. Our vacations are typically spent in a time share somewhere, and finding a gym means a bigger excursion than its worth (especially when you have the only car for two hours).
What I cannot figure out is the hotel/inn/time share/villa or whatever the Hades a place we stay in is called and the approach to a "fitness room". I get "liability", but why bother with providing these more often than not awkward cable-multi-gyms. Is this more or less sympathy? I understand that dumbbells and free weights can be stolen, and fully realize why these machines are set up, but have to laugh. I still find myself going in and giving things a once over. At times, I have been tempted to break into an all out cable fest. In the end, however, common sense takes over and I realize I either need to break out body weight squats and pushups or settle on enjoying myself with a deload week (consisting of overeating, defensive driving and spending tons of money on memories, ironically with the most vivid memories being about how expensive or much money was spent.)

One of my check list items when getting ready to plan a vacation (that is going to be longer than a week) is to find a “Lifting friendly” gym. I have to agree, I really don’t even bother to look into the hotel fitness centers because they are always a waste of time. I’ve been pretty lucky and I can normally find a place fairly close to where we are staying and I don’t think I’ve ever paid over $40 for a week. I’ve even had one instance where someone I met at a meet found out I was going to be in town and he invited me to train with him while I was there.
