I train with a 67 year old novice master lifter that is a type II diabetic. Any advice on pre work out diet /training? Carbo loading during W/O only jacks up glucose level sky high. Strength gains are happening , however, they are slow. Medication for type II, unlike, insulin for type I seems to keep the muscles starved for quick glucose.

I am a Regestered Dietitian. Here a few kep points Health is number 1 alot of listers don't like to here that. DIet is key small frquent meals with mostly low glycemic carbs but all carbs turn to sugar in your blood so if you consume too many you will have a higher blood sugar if you are diabetic. Diet is key number 1 and I believe you need to see a porfessional to evaluate your diet so you can be at optimum levels for both performance and help. You need to check you sugars pre exercise and post exercise and possibly during until you have it down. I am available if intersted you may pm me I have competed in powerlifting bodybuilding and have worked with athletes before.

Ayezer, Thank you. My lifting friend has recently addressed his Powerlifting/ Type 11 situation with his Dr. The advice was the same as your advice. He does now and has for years followed a strict diet. Perhaps his problem is age as well as Type11 related. Perhaps at 67 year one should not expect super fast strength gains I have had him reduce the number of sets and reps after a warm up .Then use his energy on moderate to heavy singles
