Well, it is Monday morning and I am still alive, this was one of the major goals of competing in Albuquerque. This meet was all events done for 60 seconds, how far or how many in a minute until the last event, the "Grinder" it was a 5 minute long event(three part medley and then keg loading for 5 minutes or until you gave up).
The meet was run very well and it was great to see Clay, Chan and Travis again and to meet some new people from CA and TX. My brother from another mother, Scott Tully and I, took the KC Strongman show out west and here is what happened from my part, I will let Scott do his own write-up. All I will say is that it was great to see him competing again and he did an outstanding job in every event and kept me motivated by yelling at me.
Middleweight Division
5 competitiors D.J.(NE), Rusty(NM), Anthony(NM), Micah(TX), Andrew(TX)
1st event Yoke 500#
This went pretty well after I finally got going, I was going up a slight grade. At about the 30' mark my lower back started bothering me and I thiought about putting it down and then I told myself no, you didn't come a thousand miles to do that so suck it up. I made it 186', good enough for 2nd.
2nd Event Farmers 240#
This went well, as it is one of my better events. I started at the top of the grade this time. I made it 231', good enough for 1st.
3rd Event Very Worn Tire Sled Drag 200-250#?
We all started this from the uphill side, thank goodness. I did as well as I could but this just plain sucked. I made it 114'5", good enough for 1st. There were four of us that were within 2' of each other, very close event.
4th Event Odd Object Load 150# Gas Cylinder, 160# Atlas Stone, 170# Gas Cylinder, 170# Fire Hydrant, 180# Round Keg(ET Style).
The nice thing about winning the earlier events was I knew how many or how far I had to do on things. This event went OK as I loaded 12 objects in the minute allowed, good enough for 2nd.
5th Event "The Grinder" 385# Yoke 50', 180# Farmers 50', 100-150#? Tire Sled Drag 50' then start loading 7 kegs 80#-200#.
I knew I needed to get 20 kegs loaded for the win overall. The guy I was trying to beat had just loaded 25 so I told Scott and my wife just get me to 20 because that is all I need for the overall win. Well, the first three 50' parts went OK, then I got over to the kegs and was trying to get a little air in my lungs and away I went with loading the kegs. This went OK as every 4th or 5th keg I would take a break to TRY and get some air. Anyway, when I finally loaded the 20th one for the overall win, I heard I still had 90 seconds left so what was I to do. I said screw it, lets go for the event win so I kept loading and ended up with 27 loaded, good enough for 1st. This may not have been the smartest thing to do, not that I have been accused of being the smartest guy in the world, but I figured lets go out with a bang.
1st Overall
I had a great time, the meet was very well run with some unique awards. It meant alot to me to win/do well as I was competing against guys that were all in their early to mid 20's. Also, it was a huge mental game all day long as the weights weren't that heavy but combined with that altitude they felt like a ton. I have never had my lungs hurt so bad in my life, I kept asking myself "and I do this stuff because???", and then I remembered, because I am addicted to the game.
