Thanks guys. Today was my last heavy workout before my competition.
Bench 45x25 135x12 205x10 265x8 325x5 360x3 325x5 360x3 325x6 360x4
Seated rows 135x12 160x8 185x8
Cut back on intensity to get ready. 360x4 was a pr for me so I should be in good shape. Weight this a.m. was 223.6 so I should have no problem making weight.

LoL – I guess the meaning of “light workout” is relative. Good luck, let us know how you do.

Thanks guys. To me doing sets of 3-5 is heavy where as doing more than 5 reps without max intensity is light. I just don't feel the pressure on my shoulders when I use weights that I can do 6 or more reps for multiple sets. Now doing a set of 5 for only one set with as much as I can handle can be very heavy.

Decided to go in for one more workout. In the past I have found that if I took a whole week off I did not fare very well in my competitions so i did a relatively light workout. Will have three full days to recover.
Benck 125x12 205x5 265x5 330x5 330x5 330x5 310x8 310x9
Paused the last rep on each set and everything felt light, so that should be a good sign

Just got home from my competition. Ended up setting a new Virginia state record with a 391 bench. Had planned to do 402 but all in all I am pleased going 369,385,391. Just did not anything left in the tank to try 402 so ended with 391.

Congratulations Buckeye.
I see a lot of guys move more weight in their training log than they wind up doing in their meet. You did just the opposite - a valuable lesson buried in your log.

Thanks 3speed. I feel that if you work fairly heavy reps you can gain strength without the stress that trying to use too heavy of a weight for 1-2 reps puts on your body. I also believe in usig strict form and staying within my means. I know many people train until they just can't get that last rep but they are asking for trouble. Most training injuries happen because we tend to luse bad form when our body is taxed and we are mor likely to get injured.

Thanks zimbo and dbunch. I appreciate the thoughts. I will slow things down a bit and then plan a competition in March. Thanks again.

They had a Friday weigh in at 6:00 P.M. so thats what I did. Woke up that morning weighing right at 220 so ate a light breakfast of wheat germ and a bannana and then went to the gym for a little 35 min workout on the bike and some core work. Ate a lunch of yogurt and sliced turky and made weight with .4 of a pound to spare.

First workout after competition. I was planning on going very light and start a deload but everything felt so good I changed plans.
Bench 135x12 205x8 paused 265x5 paused 315x3 paused 355x2 paused 385x1 t&g 405x1 t&g New PR 315x9 t&g 260x10 Paused
Decline bench 225x10 275x10 295x5 Paused
Seated rows 135x12 165x8 180x6
preacher curls 70x10 80x8 90x6 100x4
All in all agreat workout for me. Everything was smooth with no strain. Probably could have done at least one more rep on all sets except my 405 which was an all time high for me.

Second workout after competition. Went to another gym that is affiliated with the gym I belong to and things felt a little strange. I know that most of it is mental but weights felt heavy.
Bench 135x12 225x10 275x6 paused 315x5 315x5 335x3 paused 275x6 paused
Decline bench 225x10 275x6 paused 295x5 paused
Seated rows 135x12 165x10 180x8
preacher curls 70x10 80x8 90x6
Trying to go a little lighter. The bars at this gym really allow the plates to spin and really threw my balance off

Fantastic job on the 405! (and also the competition 391) You've got 17 years on me, I hope that I am still hitting 400+, let alone making steady gains like you are.

Toolpod, you should have no problems doing even more when you hit my age. When I was your age i was right in the middle of raising my three kids with a very demanding job. WhenI was in my powerlifting prime I did very little training. Having said that I believe that taking that time period off was good for saving my joints so here I am lifting pretty heavy now.
