Thanks gents! and on THAT note...I guess I'll keep my whining to myself! (or wait until its squat or deadlift day) Mon 16-May-2011 Heavy Bench, Buckeye day! BWT:220.1 (did nothing but eat last week) Took last week off, to baby the right rotator cuff. It felt pretty good today after warmups. Warmups: 16X45 Rotator cuff prehab 8X135 8X135 5X225 3X275 Buckeye 485 modified: 8X310 6X350 (310 and 350 are the called-for weights) 4X375 3X420 Crushed this!!! PR Triple!!! Could have done 4 1.5X450 1X460 Nice and smooth 4X380 Got hasty, and therefore got sloppy on rep 2 of the double and went out of groove high. Had I stayed tight, I think I would have gotten it. Next time! Still, the PR triple at 420 and the fact that 460 is now "just a workout weight" is something to celebrate: Thank you Lord. Body weight dips, 60-sec breaks: 25 15 12 10 Done!

Great job on the bench press! You are where I would like to be but at my age I may not get there

Thanks for the props, man. I'm 41, not a spring chicken, but by being careful and smart about training have been able to keep moving the sticks. I've talked to a lot of folks who are older: the consensus is that with smart training, attention to workload and one's body, you can make gains and even lifetime PR's well into the 50's

You are right. I myself have reached milestones for me in the bench after age 50. Last year at the age of 57 my best gym bench was 400 and best competition bench was 380. I have a competition 6-4 with agoal of 385-390. I find that I can still make gains at my age but can only count a 10-15 pound gain per year. My best bench while in my 40's was only 370, so there is definately the possibility of gains in your 50's

Ok, been busy and really slacking on my log. Mea culpa. Highlights from the last couple weeks: Hit 475 touch and go...despite an overeager spotter: I *had* this...but he gets nervous over 420 or so, next time I'll hit it without him touching it...and this was May 31...I have a better Farmers' tan now! Mon 20-Jun-2011 MMA Heavy Day BWT: 219 (yes George, I am no longer a "light 220" ) 8X45 Rotator cuff prehab 8X135 8X135 5X185 5X225 3X275 3X335 1X385 Working sets, 4 minute break between sets, self unrack all. 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 2X415 3X415 Bodyweight dips, 60 second break between sets: 30 20 10 9 Done!

I'd take a heavy 220 over my current situation! I remember being a light 242, and 275...I guess I'm a light 308 now...so thats a positive, right?....lol.
I'. actually right on 275....slowly working back into the 242's.

yeah, George...actually its more like "light 242" for me...recently I've been tipping the scales at 221 - 223 walking around. Still well within cutting for 220 on-the-platform...but a harbinger of "things-to-come" on the weight. Then again: this is still coming with the bench increase...so it's all good! I'll take a 230lb bodyweight if it means I can hit 500+ on the bench! (so long as I don't look like a sea-cow)
R-546: Thanks man!

Sea cows have charm though. Not too many other creatures with such proportions and ugliness seem to reach the same level of adoration without excessive alcohol use.

Just caught up on your logs. Really a great job on the bench. I usually compete 220 or 242 and weigh about 218 right now. Doctor put me on sugar meds so I want to lose weight to get off meds. My bench has suffered alittle but I am sure it ill come back after I adjust. I would love to be where you are.

Sat 09-Jul-11
Warren PA, Carl Seeker's Summer Beast Meet. N/S but run according to SSA rules.
I was originally going just to watch my wife lift, but I got talked into competing, even though I went heavy 5 days beforehand.
Weighed in at 219.5, in my skivvies.
Opened at 450, went well.
Missed at 465 on my second, just below lockout.
Got 465 on my third attempt, video forthcoming (already up on my youtube page) New comp PR!
Missed 470, shy of lockout.
Mary weighed in at 131, and she finished up with 160lbs on the bench, which was a 5lb comp PR for her!

Great job. Just think what you could do with the proper training cycle going in and a little prep work. Congratulations. Also congratulations to your wife. I wish I could get my wife into the gym.
