proceeded to projectile vomit all over the bed. This was around 1:00 in the morning. Ha, I have a 16mo old and she has yet to do that, but the dog did that just a few weeks ago!

Thanks, that was a watershed moment for me. 500 as a single was a huge mental barrier for me for a long time. So actually doing it for reps means I’ve definitely put it behind me and I can start looking at 600 now.

5 hours of shoveling snow, I moved an unknown tonnage of the heavy wet stuff. I think that counts as my workout today.

Thursday, December 27, 2012 5/3/1 cycle 6, week 1 Pressing
Strict press 1x5@65 1x5@85 1x5@100 1x5@115 1x3@135 1x3@155 1x3@175 7x1@175
Push press – (Ugly as they were) 1x3@175 4x5@135
Notes: up till now I’ve either done just push or strict press and every time the other has suffered so on pressing days I plan to do both and see if that helps any.

Risking sounding young and foolish,
What do you mean by the different presses?

Risking sounding young and foolish, What do you mean by the different presses? Strict and Push are types of overhead press. Strict is using just upper body to press the weight, push press is using leg drive to help the upper body press the weight.

What Ryan said…
In the past I would only focus on one type of press, either the Push or Strict and my form would just go to Hades on the one I wasn't doing and I would have to completely have to learn how to do again. So I’m just going to do both at the same time and hopefully I can keep my form on both

I usually go to my quad stance for racking and unracking. I use a lose grip on the bar. My squat isn't too heavy so I don't know if it will help.

Sunday, December 30, 2012 Benching
I forgot my sheet so I just did a lot of free style benching I tried to estimate what my base number were so I worked up to 235 for 5 the I dropped to 150 and did 5 set of 5, which was actually way to easy so I jumped up to 190 and did another 6 sets of 5.
Monday, December 31, 2012 Squats 1x5@185 1x3@245 1x3@285 1x5@340 1x3@370 3x3@235
Notes: Not a great day but I’m fighting a case of the daycare crud I got complements of all the kids that have been in my home over the last few days. Every one of them had a runny drippy noses. I did squat in the monolith today. It was a lot more comfortable than the cage. I didn’t realize at first that they had a Texas squat bar and they’re 55 lbs.

Curious, do you find the shoulder work helps your bench or do you just do it as part of a bigger program?
Thanks, Ryan

Ryan,
My pressing is mostly for my “other” strength events. I compete in strongman, Highland heavy events, and USAWA (Odd lifts) Pressing comes to play big time. With that being said I do think that pressing does help some with my bench. I don’t know that I would put as much emphasis on it as I do if I just did powerlifting.

They are a lot of fun although I got to admit the SM are starting to take their toll on my body I may only have 3 to 5 years of competing left in me. Getting harder to keep up with the kids.
