Yesterday I had my first attempt at the farmers carry with real implement, fully loaded. Up till then I was training with 120 dumbbells in the gym (it was the biggest they had). I noticed two big differences. The first and most obvious, 400 lbs is a lot heaver than 240. Despite that I was able to lift and carry the implements the 60 ft to the turning point. Here is where I ran into the second difference and my problem. The dumbbells, besides being lighter are shorter, so the weight is closer to the body and easier to control. I was making the turns easy enough. With the implements the weight is 12 to 18 inches in front of you and behind you. When I got to the turning point I started to turn be the weights did not. They wanted to keep going in the same direction, forward.
I wore myself out trying to figure out a way make the turns. Eventually the only way I could do it was to walk past the 60 ft mark, drop the implements turn myself, pick them up again and walk back. Several problems here, first is that reloading half way through the walk takes time and a lot of energy. Secondly I’m not sure that that is legal. I’m looking for any advice on making the turn. Thanks for your help!

At the last contest I scored we allowed the lifter to do either. We did this as part of a carrying medley. Not dropping them can be faster but you need to make sure you're strong enough to finish it out. I also cringe when I see guys whipping around a corner because I always picture a knee blowing out. The biggest issue of the day for some, especially being the first event of the day, was people ripping their hands up. I think rules for strongman vary so you just need to check ahead of time if your doing a contest. As far as comparing them to dumbbells - they just don't compare because of the size and bulk. The dumbbells are ok for some training but nothing compares to training with the actual equipment.

Dan, First off, you will be allowed to drop them as many times as you want at our meet. You do only have 60sec. though. As far as the turn, you have to use your momentum and wrists to get them to turn as you do. The biggest problem people usually have is after they make the turn, the farmers want to keep turning. Another things that some do, is to take a wider turn instead of trying to "turn on dime", so to speak. Talk to Vince/Glenn about it on Sun. when you throw with them or give me a call and I can talk to you more about it or have you come over and work with you on it. Also, I may have you get in contact with Jesse Jobe(he is in Council Bluffs) as he trains strongman every Friday night at 5:30. There are alot of guys you will know from the RAW meets, that train over there that can be of great help to you.

Thanks DJ. I’ll talk to Vince Sunday. I don’t think I’ll have a problem with the weight, I actually did the first 60 ft in about 20 seconds, if it was a straight run of 120 ft I would be OK. The turn just stalls me sucks all my energy, but therein lays the challenge.

Can we use a weight belt on the farmers carry and/or the Yoke?

Yes sir, you can use a belt on every event. Also, chalk can be used on every event. You can also wear knee sleeves and wrist wraps too. Some do, some don't.

You may check Dick's, Sports Authority or Scheels. I get Muellers. I am not sure how big they go but are only $12 each. Just something to keep your joints warm.

We have 220 lb farmers handles at my gym the are probably three foot plus long and I have seen the problems you are describing. I can tell you a few things that may help:
make sure your grip is even and in the middle of the grip or else the implements will tip forward or backward which kills the grip
In the turn take it wide and slow down or else you will cross the implements again killing your grip.

Thanks all, I finally came to the same conclusion. I have to hit the turn slow and take it wide, and for me at least it needs to be a right hand turn. We'll see Saturday how it goes.
