Hello to all. I just recently decided that I want to do a powerlifting meet; raw seems the way to go. Can someone help me find a meet? Also, will I need to have a coach attend? I'm in Kentucky.

First welcome. Its nice to see young ladies like yourself getting involved in this sport. As for Kentucky. Just go to powerlifting watch.com. Or, get a copy of Power lifting USA. They list all the meets worth going to. As for a coach. You don't need one to go along. It sure does help though. Most of the time you can get help from others that are there. Plus the guys are always looking out for the girls. Don't forget to visit our womens thread pages. I hope they can help.

Welcome aboard!
Depending on what part of Kentucky you are from, we hold meets here in the Oh/Wv/Pa border.

Hi new girl! By now, I'm not so new as I've been lifting in meets for about 6 months. I really enjoy the sport and found everyone to be very friendly and helpful. As for finding a power lifting group, I found the best thing was to call the gyms in your area, ask for the manager, then just ask if the gym has powerlifters that form a group or go to meets. Often it's pretty informal for training, but they all come together for a meet. Also, Saturday morning is a good time to look for powerlifters that might be willing to be your partner. Good luck and let us how it turns out!!

Gravisferrum, who responded above, is running a meet on April 11th in Martins Ferry, Ohio. You can contact him for details at his e-mail: gravis_ferrum@yahoo.com. He's very nice and helpful. As suggested by blackstone, you can look at the site: www.powerliftingwatch.com/kentucky and it lists Kentucky meets coming up and the gyms that are registered with powerlifting associations. Some of these associations have the option of lifting Equipped OR Raw so check the entry form to see if there is Raw lifting. Best wishes for strong lifts, -- pl 105.

Thanks for the compliment!
Nia: One thing that is unfortunately inevitable in this sport is travel. For some there is a chance of a local meet, but by in large you will more than likely be hitting the road. This is especially certain if you end up wanting to continue meets and participating in three or more a year, or if you plan on attending the more prestigious named ones.
My first powerlifting experience, before competing, was a curiosity that had me travel clear to Cleveland to just watch a USAPL meet. The travel can be somewhat bothersome, however 97% of this sport is in the training, so shelling out some money for the rare occasion (interms of how many a year) of a meet is actually a small expense. (Compared to gym fees, buying your own equipment, possibly supplements, etc.)
