In a discussion I was having with Josh Langevin at my last meet, an outstanding competitor in his own right, we were talking about the financial burden of traveling to these big meets and the lack of sponsorship. I don’t fall into that sponsorship class. But please tell me why someone like Jim Aikey doesn’t have a sponsor? I believe PL watch has him ranked as number 3 raw in the 181s. It’s a shame that there will be a big unity meet going on in the first of the year and people that should be there will not. Just the way the ball bounces?

I can see this. We have several top lifters in Maryland wanting to go to the Worlds, but can not afford it. I (Polak Made LLC) will sponsor them to go. Some people seem to to have no problem with getting sponsors, even when not top lifters. If they have secrets, let the rest of us in on them so more lifters can go to the big meets.

It's all about marketing yourselves to the right people. Just get out there and start talking to people; emails, letters, calls, videos, set-up a free website to showcase yourself to these people; to local businesses, gyms, product suppliers. It takes work to find these "right people". Doesn't even need to be in the same catagory. Get multiple small sponsors to start out with. It'll all add up.
Show these potential sponsors how YOU can help THEM by being your sponsor!

Also, before you go looking for a sponsor, work the numbers to see what you may need for for a year's worth of expenses. Some companies drop thousands on less effective marketing monthly and what you may need may be small change to them for you 'to effectively promote their business'.

I think m summed it up, Chancey. Potential sponsors aren't beating down anyone's door to offer up $. Top PL'ers gotta find them and make a case for it. That's mostly what I see on all the websites like HOP, elitefts, etc..... Of course, that's all I have visibility into, so count it as my 1 cent only.

Awesome advice M! You seem to know what your talking about. If I had those skills I would be beating down their doors. If Jim Aikey keeps getting better, which I hear he is, than the numbers will eventually talk for him.
Is 100% RAW promoting their lifters that are invited to that unified meet?

Shawn,
Is this info something that can be put on this site to help some of the Raw athletes? The more tools available to the lifters may not only help the lifters themselves, but the federation as a whole with more exposure.

Bud, I might not be a genetic freak but do my good looks count for anything?
Seriously though for people looking for sponsors... After nationals myself and Samsa were photgraphed and it was in the paper. samsa was wearing a pizza shop's shirt from his hometown. He went into the business a fed days later and everyone commented on it and offered him 100$ if he would wear it again next time. (We have good relations with the local paper, so every meet we stand a chance of having a decent article). Anyways, I went into our local pizza shop and mentioned Bobby. not only did the owner see the article, she mentioned to me she would be willing to pay if i did the same thing, mentioning that 300$ would not be unreasonable.
300$ for wearing a shirt and mentioning a "thanks" in the paper? You better believe I'll do that. As a matter of fact, I would wear one at the meet, while shopping, weed eating and to bed for 300$. This would have cut our World expenses in half, yet we still cannot go for a slew of other reasons.
Like Bud said, unless you are the national best with the look (and personality) to match I don't think Rockstar is going to pay your gym dues, your entry fees and your travel expenses. if you work on your networking, reach out and deliver on your promises, however, you might be able to pull off some much needed help through local sponsors.
Just think about little league teams, soap box derby races, whatever they are...business front hundreds of dollars all the time. In return their name is on the jerseys and cars. Its there...work on it.

First I would like to say that BMF Sports/BUD is a great sponsor. When I got sick he sent me all kinds of great stuff to get me better fast. I did not ask...He just sent the stuff right away to me.
So If some of you are lucky enough to get Sponsored by BUD/BMF Sports go for it.
Tell and show the sponsor how you can get them more business by sponsoring you.
Me and the wife also have been sponsored by VPX sports for a few years now. Everyone always ask what supplements we take. And we tell them VPX. When we get Magazine write ups we always mention our sponsors. Also put there link on your web site.
See how it all works.....

Thanks guys for the input. Lots of good stuff here for anybody with the will to pound on a few doors. I think we all like to see our local guys (yeah, VT is considered local when you live in NH) get a chance. Jim Aikey just comes to mind because everytime I see him he keeps getting better, he looks like a bodybuilder, and on the personal side has a sister with Down Syndrome (or other handicap?) who competes as well. Good story.

To the lifters:
Beware of a sponsor, federation or anybody else that wants to control you.

after nationals, the gym i lift at called the local news station and they came and interviewed me and did a special about me and my lifting. i said how awesome the fed was and the sport in general and wore my raw powerlifting shorts for the interview (i had to wear my gym's shirt cuz they're great to me) and said how great paul and bud were and how they treat the lifters well and run a great meet, but they cut that part out of the version that got aired to talk about my academics. what squares. haha
would that be the kind of stuff that a sponsor would like?
here's the link to the interview if anyone's interested... http://www.myfoxwghp.com/myfox/pages/Ins....Y&pageI d=5.7.1
